Caged Fury 12 Post Results
10/11/10 Cleveland, OH: With the NAAFS amateur season winding down, Saturdays Caged Fury 12 card was perhaps the last opportunity for fighters to secure their slot in this years Night of Champions super show set for this December 4th in Cleveland.
In the nights main event, last years national lightweight champion George Comer (8-0), defeated the previously unbeaten Nick Kilian (5-1) via unanimous decision. Comers wrestling once again proved to be the difference as he was able to control the tempo while scoring with multiple take-downs throughout the course of this welterweight semi-final bout. Comer now moves on to face Josh Oppenheimer in December as he looks to become the first amateur to win back to back national titles in two different weight classes.
Oppenheimer (5-2) scored the biggest win of his young career thus far with an impressive upset win over Bill Morosetti (6-3) by unanimous decision. Oppenheimer, an Evolve MMA product, took the fight to Morosetti while fighting free and easy with all of the pressure seemingly on Morosetti who came in ranked #1 nationally in the welterweight division. The win sets up what should be an entertaining match-up between two of the regions premier fighters and fight camps.
PM Fight Clubs Clint Musselman (5-2) scored an upset win over fan favorite RJ Buck (8-2) with a second round rear naked choke to secure his slot in the finals. After an early season KO loss to Justin Steave back in April, Musselman has won 2 straight NAAFS fights to earn a rematch with the hard hitting featherweight. Steave clinched his slot in the finale by defeating a very game Francis Healy (5-1) by unanimous decision giving him an identical 2-0 record in the series since his highlight reel KO over Musselman. Steave will likely be a heavy favorite come December, but one thing we’ve learned from past Night of Champion events is that no fighter should be considered a lock when it comes to a title fight in the NAAFS.
“The Nightmare” Nelson Best (6-1) once again lived up to his nickname with a hard fought decision win over Nathan Bryant (7-4) in a heavyweight semi-final bout. Perhaps the nights most entertaining bout, Best and Bryant went toe to toe for nine minutes both exchanging hay-makers that would have floored most competitors. On this night it was Nelson Best improving to 6-1 and moving one step closer to a national title.
Former University of Toledo running back, Chase Owens (7-2) returns to the national finals as he outlasted Milan Wesley (4-2) in a middleweight battle. Owens won via split decision in a back and forth fight that saw Owens use his athleticism to squeak out one of the biggest wins in his young MMA career.
Owens will face Team DNA’s Bob Rech (6-1) who defeated Canada’s Corey Bresson (4-2) by unanimous decision. Rech used his superior wrestling to dictate the tempo and avoid any major damage from Bresson who is known primarily for his striking. The Owens vs Rech match up will see two of the more explosive wrestlers in the NAAFS go head to head for NAAFS gold.
In a match-up of two heavy hitting strikers. Jamestown, New Yorks Joe Goyette (6-1) gave Team Air-Gadlfy their first ever national finalist in the NAAFS amateur series as he defeated NAAFS veteran Joey Holt (7-5) via unanimous decision. Goyette was able to out maneuver and out point Holt with his aggressiveness being the difference in the fight. Goyette will now face Evolve MMA’s Clint Musser (5-0) in the finale when wrestler once again meets striker.
The bantam weight finals will see top ranked Isaiah Chapman (6-1) face Brett Gruber (4-2) in what should be an action packed championship bout. Chapman was able to finish Matt Montgomery (3-2) in the semis while Gruber outlasted Bhrandon Poindexter (6-4) winning a unanimous decision. Chapman will try to run wire to wire as the divisions number one ranked fighter with Gruber looking to spoil the party and bring home another national title to Ohio BJJC.
Also in action, up and coming welterweight Dave VanDeVelde improved to 3-0-1 and 2-0 in the NAAFS with an emphatic win over NAAFS veteran Landon Khakdoust (4-6). VanDeVelde will be a fighter to watch in the 2011 national amateur series.
The NAAFS would like to thank Discount Drug Mart, Bud Light, John P. Lennon, Tim Lally Chevrolet, Intimidation Clothing, and Betonfighting.com for sponsoring Caged Fury 12 and the 2010 NAAFS national amateur series.
